Birth year:
1375
Death year:
1444

Probably the painter known as the Master of Flemalle, is documented as having lived in Tournai from 1406. Because of his unconventional way of life and his having committed perjury, he was sent on a pilgrimage to St. Gillies in Provence from 1429-1430. Campin's works, which at the start of his career resembled French Manuscripts illuminations, display extremely exact powers of observation in their depiction of the smallest details. They are also characterized by the plasticity of the figures and the way in which Campin renders a depth in his paintings. These innovative elements make Campin one of the founders of the old Netherlandish paintings style. His best-known student was Roiger van der Weyden, who in turn had a noticeable influence on the pictures of his master. Major works include The Nativity, 1425, and The Thief of Gesina, 1430
