Born in 1833 England, Burne-Jones was a Pre-Raphaelite in a double sense. He desired to paint with the simplicity that preceded Raphael, but also incorporated as themes riddles from the innocent world he imagined the Middle Ages to be. Popular works are 'The Golden Stairs' and 'King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid'.
