Hans Burgkmair the elder (1473 Augsburg-1531 Augsburg) was the leading painter of his time in his home city. He received his first training at the hands of his father, Thomas Burgkmair, a painter in the late Gothic style, and then studied with Martin Schongauer in Colmar. He spent several years travelling about, probably spending some time in northern Italy, where he returned between 1501 and 1508. In 1498 he settled in his native city, joined the Guild of St. Luke, and took over his father's workshop. Burgkmair progressed beyond the late Gothic style of his early works to develop a vivid, powerful and opulent style of his own. Under the influence of Italian art, he adopted the monumental manner of the High Renaissance, and began using richer colours. Among the artist's works are Pictures for the Basilica, State Gallery in the Palais Schaezler, Augsbrg; Mary in a Rose Bower, 1509, Germanishes Natinalmuseum, Nuremberg; and Esther before Ahasuerus, 1528, Alte Pinakothek, Munich.
