Francisco de Zurbaran (1598 Fuente de Cantos-1664 Madrid) studied with Pedro Diaz de Villanueva in Seville from 1614 to 1617. In 1617 he settled in Lerena, but worked primarily for the monasteries in Sevillle. Zurbaran returned to Seville in 1629 and was awarded the honorary title of city painter. During the 1630s he was at the height of his career, and in 1634 was called by Philip IV (1605-1665) to the court in Madrid. In 1636 he returned to Seville in order to paint the important painting cycles for the Carthusians in Jerez de la Frontera (1636-1639), for the monastery in Guadalupe (1638/39) and for the Carthusians of Seville. Hoping for new commissions, he went to Madrid in 1658. Zubaran is considered one of the most prominent Spanish painters of the 17th century, together with Velazquez, Ribera and Murillo. Works by the artist include Christ on the Cross, 1627-1629, Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes, Seville; The Death of St. Bonaventure, 1629, Musee du Louvre, Paris; and St. Lawrence, 1636, The Hermitage, St. Petersburg.
