Johann Zoffany (1733 Frankfurt am Main-1810 Strand-on-the-Green), also known as Zauffaly, was raised in Regensburg Until the age of 13 alongside the son of the Prince von Thurn und Taxis, in whose service his father was employed. Zoffany's artistic training began there in 1747 with the painter Martin Speer. In 1750-1758 he studied in Rome with Masucci and Mengs; afterward, he was appointed court painter to the Viceroy in Trier. In 1760 Zoffany settled in London, where he was able to exhibit works in the "Society of Artists" from 1762 on. He advanced to become the favourite painter of King George III (1738-1820). In 1772 he traveled to Florence at the behest of the Queen. He moved to Vienna in 1776 and was elevated into the hereditary aristocracy by Empress Maria Theresia (1717-1780). Zoffany took his last great journey, to India, in 1783-1789. His oeuvre consists mainly of portraits and society pieces. Major works by the artist include Self-Portrait, 1761, Royal Portrait Gallery, London; The Modeling Class at the Roal Academy 1772, Royal Art Collection, Windsor Castle; and The Tribuna of the Uffizi, 1772-1778, Royal Art Collection, Windsor Castle.
