Giorgio Vasari (1511 Arezzo-1574 Florence) began his diverse, humanistic education with the glass painter Guillaume de Marcillant in Arezzo. From 1524 on he continued his training with Andrea del Sarto and Baccio Bandinelli in Florence. After 1532 he divided his time between Florence and Rome. In the course of his many journeys, Vasari studied Italian art from antiquity up until his lifetime, and was commissioned as a painter and architect by such influential families as the Medici and the Franse. His fame, however, rests primarily on his track entitled Le vite de" piu eccellenti pittori, scultori e architetti, or Lives of the Most Famous Painters, Sculptors, and Architects. It first appeared in 1550, and a second, expanded edition was published in 1568. Vasari's work is considered the most important original source for art history. His artistic works include: Holy Family with St. Francis, 1541, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; The Resurrection of Christ, 1550, Pinacoteca nazionale, Siena; and the incredulity of Thomas, c. 1570, San Croce, Florence.
