Frans Snyders (1579 Antwerp-1657 Antwerp) was trained in Antwerp by Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Hendrik van Balen. In 1602 he joined the City's St. Luke's Guild as a master. In 1608/1609, he journeyed to Italy, first to Rome and then to Milan. In july 1609, Snyders was again in Antwerp. There, two years later, he married Margaritha de Vos, the sister of the painters Cornelis and Paul de Vos. In 1619 he became a member of the Romanist Society; In 1628 he headed the society as its deacon. Frans Snyders is considered the most important Flemish still-life painter of the Baroque era. He painted large market and kitchen pieces, fruit, fowl and game still lifes, as well as hunting scenes and animal pictures. All his works are characterized by a very naturalistic rendering of the subject matter. He often worked together with Peter Paul Rubens, Anthonis van Dyck, Cornelis de Vos and other Antwerp figural painters. Among the artist's paintings are Fowl Still Life, 1614, Wallraf Richartz-Museum, Cologne; Elk Hunt, c. 1638, Museo del Prado, Madrid; and Stilll Life with Game, Fowl, Vegetables and Fruit Basket, c. 1640, Gemaldegalerie, SMPK, Berlin.
