Alonso Sanchez Coello (c. 1531 Benifairon-1588 Madrid) was trained in Flanders and Lisbon. From 1557 on, he remained at the Spanish court in Valladolid, where he became the favorite court painter of King Phillip II (1527-1598). Sanchez coello was strongly influenced by the works of Titian and Anthonis Mor, whom he knew personally. In addition to altarpieces, Sanchez Coello concentrated on single and double portraits, as well as paintings of riders. With their rigidly assigned compositions, his pictures were well-suited to the etiquette of the Spanish court; Sanchez Coello usually chose coloring in sensitive and harmoniously shaded warm tones. Works by the artist include The Infant Don Carlos, 1564 Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna; The Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine, 1578, Museo del Prado, Madrid; and Portrait of Philip II c. 1580, Museo del Prado, Madrid.
