Jacob van Ruisdael (1628/1629 Haarlem-1682 Amsterdam?) was the son of the picture framer and painter Isaac van Ruisdael. He probably received his earliest training in the atelier of his uncle, Solomon van Ruysdael. In 1648 he was accepted as master in the Haarlem St. Luke's Guild; but works were signed and dated by him as early as 1646. during the 1640s and early 1650s he traveled to the region around Egmont to Bentheim and Kleve, near the border between Germany and the Netherlands. Around 1656/57 van Ruisdael moved from Haarlem to Amsterdam where he established himself as a citizen. In 1676 he received the diploma of Doctor of Medicine in Caen. Jacob van Ruisdael was one of the most important Dutch landscape painters of his generation. Significant works by the artist include Waterfall with Mountain Castle, c. 1668, Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Braunschweig; The Mill at Wijk near Durstede, c. 1670, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; and The Bleaching Fields near Haarlem, c. 1670, Kunsthaus, Zurich.
