Giulio Romano (c. 1499 Rome - 1546 Mantua), Whose real name was Giulio Pippi, learned his craft in the atelier of Raphael, becoming his most important pupil and his favorite assistant. Until 1524 this young artist, also influenced by Bramante and Michelangelo, was active in Rome. Afterward he was court painter and architect to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. From 1525 to 1535 Giulio Romano was engaged in constucting a country castle, the palazzo de Te, for the Duke Federigo Gonzaga (1500-1540), adorning it with his famous frescoes. In 1537 he was occupied with the decorative ornamentation of various rooms of the palazzo Ducale in Mantua. Romano was decisive in spreading Raphael's formal principals in northern Italy. Other works by the artist include the Martyrdom of St. Stephen, c. 1520-1525, San Stefano, Genoa; Madonna with the Washbowl (La Madonna della catina), c. 1525, Gemaldegalerie Alter Meister, Dresden; and The Rape of Europa, c. 1530, Royal Palace, Hampton Court.
