Sebastiano Ricci (1659 Belluno-1734 Venice) traveled to Venice as a young man and studied with the artists Sebastiano Mazzoni and Federico Cervelli. From the late 1670s on he worked with Giovanni Giuseppe dal sole in Bologna. Ricci received numerous commissions in Piacenza and in Rome through his patron, Count Ranuccio II Franese. In 1694 he went to Florence; from1696-1698 he was active in Milan, which is likely where he encountered Alessandro Magnasco. After this period, Ricci was again situated primarily in Venice, but he also visited Vienna (1701-1703). The works of this significant Venetian Rococo painter are characterized by agitated, decorative, illisionistic forms and light color tones. Among his works are Scipio's Magnanimity, c. 1705, Royal Collection London; Marriage of Bacchus and Ariadne, c. 1711 Graf von Schonborn Art Collection, Pommersfelden; and Bathsheba Bathing, c. 1725, Bemaldegalerie SMPK, Berlin.
