Antonio Pisanello

Country:
Italy
Birth year:
1395
Death year:
1455

Pisanello (1395 Pisa-1455 probably Rome), whose real name was Antonio di Pucci Pisano, was raised in Verona, the native city of his widowed mother. From 1418 to 1420 he studied in Venice under Gentile da Fabriano, and as his assistant participated in the painting of the Doge's Palace. Around 1423 Pisanello followed his master to Florence, but moved to Rome after his death in 1427. After approximately 1430 Pisano became on of the most sought-after painters of his day, working for the courts in Mantua, Ferrara, and Milan, as well as in Naples for King Alfonse of Aragon ((1396-1458). Pisanello, who made a name for himself as a painter of frescoes and panels, as a draftsman, and as a medalist, stands as one of the representatives of the international Gothic style, uniting Gothic delicacy and elegance with joy in narration and a sharp observation of nature. Works by the artist include The Annunciation, c. 1426, San Fermo, Verona; St. Gerorge and the King's Daughter, c. 1435 Santa Anastasia, Verona; and The Vision of St. Eustachius, c. 1448, The National Gallery, London.
