Sebastiano del Piombo (c. 1485 Venice-1547 Rome), whose given name was Sebastiano Luciani, is also known as Viniziano. According to Giorgio Vasari, he studied first with Giovanni Bellini and afterward in Venice with Giorgione, whose style deeply influenced the young artist. In 1511 Piombo went to Rome at the call of Agostino Chigi to decorate the villa farnesina with frescoes, Aside from a period in Venice in 1528/29, Piombo remained until the end of his life in Rome, where he was awarded the honorary office of keeper of the seal by the Curia in 1531. Sebastiano del Piombo chiefly pursued large altarpieces for Roman churches, but was also active as a portrait painter. Both Raphael and Michelangelo influenced his style, which is characterized by monumentality and a powerful formal language present in most of his large-format works. Other works by the artist include Cardinal Carondelet and his Secretary, c. 1521-1515, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid; The Resurrection of Lazarus, 1517-1519, The National Gallery, London; and The Scourging of Christ, 1521-1524, Cappella Borgherini, San Pietro in Montorio, Rome.
