Michael Pacher (c. 1435 Bruneck-1498 Salzburg) probably received his early artistic training in his native city, and is mentioned for the first time in 1467 as a painter and citizen of Bruneck, located in the south Tyrolean Pustertal. In 1484 he moved to Salzburg. Where he worked on a high altar in the Franciscan church that remained uncompleted at his death. Pacher's artwork shows the influence of Hans Multscher, and recapitulates, Multscher's Sterzinger Altarpiece (Completed in 1458) as well as the art of northern Italy. In all probability Pacher traveled to Mantua and Padua in the 1450s and again around 1475. Active as a painter and a carver, Pacher numbers among the outstanding artists north of the Alps whose work clearly illustrates the transition from Gothic to the early Renaissance in his strongly expressive paintings, the outward movements of the figures are combined with a deep introspection. The artist's significant works also incude High altar, 1471-1481, parish church of St. Wolfgang, St. Wolfgang (Salzkammergut).
