Born in 1830 Germany, Bierstadt lived in America and like a lot of American artists at the time was trained in Europe. In his late 20s he embarked on a series of expeditions and travelled to the far west of America, revealing to him a scope of untouched natural majesty. The West was still wilderness, inhabited by native Americans who did not pollute or disrupt the land. Bierstadt's works of this landscape, astonished and uplifted those living in heavily polluted city areas of the East, who never would have conceived such beauty.
