Giovanni Battista Moroni

Country:
Italy
Birth year:
1530
Death year:
1578

Giovanni Battista Moroni (c. 1530 Albino, near Bergamo-1578 Bergamo) probably received his training under the guidance of Alessandro Moretto in Brescia. After his apprentice years he returned to Bergamo, where he remained for the rest of his life without any long interruptions. Moroni, whose painting reflects his grappling with the works of Lorenzo Lotto and Titian, created a series of altarpieces that are still to be found today, particularly in the churches of the northen Italian province of Bergamo. However, the artist's real fame rests on his portraits, which are powerful in their ability to evoke great sympathy with their subject, sharp detail of observation, and absolute simplicity of setting. In the coloration fo Moroni's portraits, restful tones of gray and brown deminate. Some of the artist's significant works include. The Abbess Lucrezia Bertova, 1557, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Isotta Brembati, c. 1560, Accademia Carrara, Bergamo; and Gian Girolamo Grumelli (Cavalier in Red), c. 1560, Collezione Conti Moroni, Bergamo.
