Bartolome Bermejo (c. 1430-1440 Cordoba-after 1495 Catalonia), whose actual name was Bartolome de Cardenas, probably came from Andalusia. He is known to have lived in Daroca, Aragon, from 1474 to 1476, and in Saragossa from 1477 to 1481. Later he worked in Catalonia, living in Barcelona from 1486 to 1494. He may have undertaken journeys to the Netherlands and Italy, as his pictures clearly show the influene of Dierick Bouts, Petrus Christus, Hugo van der Goes and Antonello da Messina. Bermejo's drawings are almost Mannerist in their fluidity, and his depictins of figures and nature achieve a degree of dramatic expression that is otherwise not found in Spanish art of his century. He is also a great master of oil painting, as can be seen in the examples depicted here. Works by the artist include ST. Domingo of Silos, c. 1475, Museo del Prado, Madrid; St. Michael with Kneeling Donor, c. 1480, Wernher Collection, Luton; and Pieta of Canon Luis Despla, 1490, Cathedral, Barcelona.
