Anthonis Mor (c. 1519 Utrecht-1576 Antwerp) studied with the Utrecht artist Jan Van Scoreel. Documents indicate that Mor was an independent painter and citizen in Utrecht by 1546. After journeying to Italy he settled in Antwerp in 1547, and two years later entered the service of Anton Perrentot de Granvela (1517-1586), Bishop of Arras. This association introduced Mor to the Habsburg courts in the Netherlands and Spain. Between 1550 and 1561 he lived in Lisbon, Spain and Brussels, and in 1554 Emperor Charles V (1500-1558) sent him to England to paint a portrait of Mary Tudor. Afterwards he lived in Utrecht and Antwerp, where he finally settled permanently in 1568. Anthonis Mor specialized in portrait painting, and completed pictures of most of the important rulers of his age. Among the artist's works are portrait of Antonperrenot de Granvella, 1549, Kunsthistorishes Museum, Vienna; Mary Tudor, 1554, Museo del Prado, Madrid; and Self-Portrait, 1558, Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence.
