Frans van Mieris (1635 Leiden-1681 Leiden) was a goldsmith's son who studied painting in his native city under Gerard Dou and, for short periods of time, with the glass painter and master draftsman Abraham van Toorenvliet and the history and portrait painter Abraham van den Tempel. In 1658 van Mieris was accepted as a master into the Guild of St. Luke of Leiden, where he was active his whole life, winning some of the richest and most prominent citizens for patrons. Even the Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici (1642-1723) and Archduke Leopold Wihelm (1614-1662) numbered among his customers. Along with his teacher Dou, van Mieris is considered the most important exponent of "Leiden Fine Painting." His oeuvre consists of small format genre scenes set in interiors, portraits, and a number of historical paintings. Works by the artist include The Doctor's Visit, 1657, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna; The Music Lesson, 1658, Staatliches Museum, Schwerin; and Woman with Matchmaker, 1671, Gemaldegalarie Alter Meister, Dresden.
