(23 February 1831 – 10 July 1915) Started his marine influenced painting careeer relatively late. Mesdag was already 35 in 1866 when he decided to become an artist. Until then he had been working at his father's bank and had drawn for pleasure. He was one of the members of The Hague School. This movement received its name from a group of artists who lived and worked in The Hague between 1860 and 1890. Their work was heavily influenced by the realist painters of the French Barbizon school.
