Charles Le Brun (1619 Paris-1690 Paris), the son of a sculptor, became one of the most influential painters of his age. At age 13 he was already studying with Francois Perrier, and around 1635 was a pupil of the court painter Simon Bouet. Between 1642 and 1646 he journeyed with Nicolas Poussin to Rome, where he received stirring inspiration. In 1648 he was a founding member of the academie Royale de Peinture et Sculpture in Paris, which under his direction became the leading art school in France. In the 1660s his court work brought him numerous commissions and offices, including nomination to First Court Painter and directorship of the royal Gobelins tapestry and furniture workshop. through his various activities Le Brun exerted decisive influence on the development of the pompous and decorative Louis- fouteenth style. His works include Christ on the Cross, 1637, Pushkin Museum of the Fine Arts, Moscow; The Martyrdom of St. John Before the Latin Gate, c. 1641, St-Nicolas du Cardonnet, Paris; and the Entry of Alexander the Great into Babylon, c. 1664, Musee du Louvre, Paris.
