Birth year:
1611
Death year:
1663

Lubin Baugin (c. 1611 Pithiviers, Loiret-1663 Paris) was icknamed Le Petit Guide ("Little Guido") because of the strong influence Guido Reni had on his work. He is known to have worked in Paris from 1630, and it is likely that he lived in Rome before this. His teacher, Simon Vouet, introduced him to Italian painting. In 1645 he became a member of the Academie de St. Luc, although he was expelled from it several times. In 1651 he became a court painter. Baudin's surviving works are religious painings executed in a gentle manner with large figures and claer, broad use of color. Those still lifes signed "A Boudin," on the other hand, are heavily influenced by the late Mannerism of the School of Fontainebleau; it is not completely certain that these are by the same painter. Works by the artist include Virgin and Child with St. John, Musee des Beaux-Arts, Nancy; The Virth of the Virgin, Musee Granet, Aix-en-Provence; and Still Life with Candlestick, Galleria Spada, Rome.
