Meindert Hobbema

Country:
Netherlands
Birth year:
1638
Death year:
1709

Meindert Hobbema (1638 Amsterdam-1709 Amsterdam) spent his entire life in his native city. From approximately 1657 he studied in the workshop of the landscape painter Jacob van Ruisdael, and in 1668 he assumed the office of Barrelmaster for Wine and Oil, a position he held until the end of his life, He also married in 1668; after this point he painted only a very few pictures, which are nevertheless distinguished by their extra ordinarily fine execution. Hobema drew and painted forest landscapes in particular, often in compositions including water mills, Ponds, or broad paths. His work shows a close stylistic relationship to that of van Ruisdael. Around the mid-1660s Hobbema's paintings became noticably brighter, more atmospheric, and more brilliant in color, while his painting style became more fluid. Among Hobbema's works are Farmstead Under Trees, 1662, Musee du Louvre, Paris; Forest Landscape with Farmhouses, 1663, the Wallace Collection, London; and Landscape with Water Mill, c. 1665, the National Gallery, London.
