II Guercino (1591 Cento, near Bologna-1666 Bologna) whose actual name was Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, was a leading master of the Bolognese school. At the age of 16 he was apprenticed to a local painter, and in 1618 he traveled to Venice and Florence to study. Around 1622, he went into the service of Pope Gregory XV (Pope from 1621-1623) in Rome. He took over the direction of the Bologna Academy as the successor of Guido Reni. Guercino's major influences were Ludovico Carracci and Bartolomeo Schedoni. Early in his career he produced fresh, dynamic compositions, which were marked by tense light dark contrasts. He later used cooler colours to achieve an expressive, idealized neo classicism. Works by the artist include The Return Museum, Vienna; The Resurrection of Lazarus, 1619, Musee du Louvre, Paris and Aurora, c. 1622, Casino dell' Aurora, Rome.
