Hans Grien Baldung

Country:
Birth year:
1484
Death year:
1545

Grien Baldung was probably trained around 1500 by a Strasbourg master to follow in the tradition of Schongauer. From 1503 to 1507 he worked in Durer's work shop in Nuremburg. In 1509 he returned to Strasbourg via Halle, received his citizenship, and was accepted into the painters' Guild of St Luke as a master in 1510. From 1512 to 1516 he lived in Freilburg. Many of the different sensibilities of the time are reflected in Baldung Grien's works. Although a relationship to the art of the middle ages is still discernable in his idyllic and romantic paintings, as well as in his serious religious works. It is his mythological and allegorical paintings with their sensuous nudes that display a humanistic manner of thought, and finally supersede the artist's religious works in quality. Major works include Alter of the Virgin Mary c.1514, Munster Freilburg; The Martyrdom of St.Dorothea, 1516, Narodni Galerie, Prague; and two witches 1523, Staedelisches Kunstintitut, Frankfurt.
