Friedrich studied at the Academy in Copenhagen from 1794 to 1798 under Jens Juel, among others. He then, went to Dresden as a painter of theatrical scenery. From 1800 on he met many of the important artist of the German romantic movement in Dresden, including the poet Novalis (1772-1811), as well as the painters Georg Friedrich Kersting and Carl Gustav Carus. It was not until 1807 that he turned to canvas painting. In 1810 he became a member of the Berlin Academy, and in 1816 joined the Dresden Academy, and in 1816 joined the Dresden academy. Friedrich did not strive to create an objective representation of nature in his landscapes. Inspired by Philip Otto Rung, He instead sought to translate personally experienced metaphysical thoughts and perceptions into his paintings, Friedrich also produced extensive written work.
