In 1611, Dirck van Bubauren (c. 1590 Ultrecht-1624 Uterecht), also known as Teodore van Baburen , was a pupil of the Mannerist painter Paulus Moreelse in his native city. From 1617 to 1622 he worked with David de Haen in Rome, where he was influenced by Carlo Sarceni and Sarceni's teacher, Caravaggio. Upon his return to Utrecht he became a member of thepainters' Guild of St. Luke. Baburen was one of the leading masters of the Utrecht Caravaggists, a group that strongly influenced later artists such as Frans Hals, Rembrandt and Jan Vermeer. A characteristic of his painting style in his focus on particular character types. He also brings the human body into the foreground, using light and shadow to emphasize its physicality. Baburen painted mostly bibical and mytholigical subjects, and was especially famous for his genre scenes. His works include The Burial, 1617, S. Pietro in Montoria, Rome; Young Boy with Jew's Harp, 1621, Centraal Museum, Utrecht; and Prometheus Bound, 1623, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
