Was the first German artist to focus solely on still life painting. From as early as 1594 he was active in Frankfurt; he is known to have worked along with the Flemish artist Lucas van Valkenborsch, who introduced him to the art of his homeland. Around 1600 Flegel began working as a miniaturist; thus his early work is distinguished by its fragmented composition and its aggregated, representational style. His later pictures formal and flower still lifes begin to exhibit a more dense, centered composition, in which sensitively painted objects are composed in an original and well thought-out manner. Works by the artist include Still Life with Flowers and Fruit, 1610, The Great Feast, and Still Life with Candle, 1636.
