1585
Death year:
1634

Hendrick van Avercamp (1585 Amsterdam-1634 Kampen) was also called De Stomme van Kampen ("the mute of Kampen") because he was a deaf mute. He was probably trained as a painter by Gillis va Conixloo, and was also inspired by the works of pieter Bruegel the Elder and Arent Arentsz. Sometime after 1610 he moved to Kampen. Avercamp painted mostly winter landscapes containing multiple figures, but he was also known to paint seascapes. His realistic painting style is distinguished by its fine use of perspective and its vivic colors, both of which distinguish his work from that done in the Flemish tradition; instead, he creates a connection to Dutch art. One of the most important artists of his time, Avercamp had a great influence on the later development of landscape painting. The artist's works included winter Landscape with Skaters, 1605, Wallraf Richartz,Museum, Cologne; Winter Pleasures in Yselmuiden, c. 1613, Musee d' Art et d' Histoire, Geneva; and Winter Landscape with Skaters, 1620, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam.
