Country:
Italy
Birth year:
1387
Death year:
1455

Also known as Beato Angelico, is one of significant painters of the period between the late Gothic and the early Renaissance. Already a trained artist, he entered the Dominician monastery at the age of 20. In 1436 the monastery moved to San Marco in Florence, and in 1447/1448 and 1452 onward Fra Angelico worked for the papal court in Rome while simultaneously in Orvieto. In his frescoes and panel paintings he embraced the Renaissance style whilst developing his own, evident by the closed nature of his figures. Significant works include Virgin and Child with Saints (the Annalena Panel), Scenes from the Lives of Sts Stephen and Lawrence and Scenes from the Life of Christ.
