Gerrit Dou

Country:
Netherlands
Birth year:
1613
Death year:
1675

Dou is the most important miniaturist to originate in Leiden. He was an apprentice under his father, a glass painter, then under the copper engraver Bartholomeus Dolendo, and finally under Rembrandt from 1628-1631. As an independent artist, he co-founded the St. Luke's Guild in his hometown in 1648. Dou was a well known genre and portrait painter even during his own lifetime, but he also produced still life and religious paintings. He is outstanding in his ability to combine traditional Netherlanders miniature painting with the Dutch predilection for trompe-l'oeil work. He adopted Rembrandt's chiaroscuro effects, composition of room scenes, and the motif of the petit bourgeois milieu. Among his students was Frans van Mieris, the Elder. The artist's most significant works include Tobit and Anna Awaiting the Return of Tobias, 1630, Young Mother, 1658, The Night School, 1663.
