Lucas Cranach

Country:
Germany
Birth year:
1472
Death year:
1553

Was probably trained by his father, Hans Cranach. From 1500 to 1504 he worked in Vienna and had contact with humanist circles. From 1505 he worked at the Saxon court in Wittenberg, where he had a large workshop and from 1519 was a member of the city council, eventually becoming mayor. Influenced by painting in the alpine region and by the works of Albrecht Durer, Cranach soon developed and individualized painting style that combined landscape and narrative scenes to form a romantic whole. This concept was important for the development of southern German painting and led him to be considered founder of the Danube School. He was again inspired by Dutch and Italian paintings he saw on a trip to Holland in 1508. The artist's works include Portrait of Dr. Johannes Cuspinian, 1502/3, Cardinal Albert von Brandenberg before the cross, 1520-1530, and Hercules and Omphale,1537.
