Cima da Conegliano (c. 1459 Canegliano 1517/18 Conegliano), whose given name was Giovanni Battista Cima, probably studied painting with Bartolomeo Montagna in Vicenza as well as with Alvise Vivarini. He was also notably influenced by the works of Antonello da Messina, and later by Titian and Giorgione. In 1492 he went to Venice, where he worked until 1516. Cima developed an independent style early on, although his works remain thematically and artistically close to those of Fiovanni ellini. His compositions, which tend to display a calm balance, are characterized by their emotional content; a gentle, peaceful atmosphere; and precise observation of nature. Cima da Conegliano painted mostly religious motifs, chiefly Virgin and Child compositions, but also dealt with some secular subjects. Major works by the artist include virging and Child with Saints, 1489, Galleria dell' Accademia, Vencie; The Baptism of christ, 1994, San Giovanni in bragora, Venice; and The Healing of Annanias, c. 1498, Gemaldegalerie, SMPK, Berlin.
