Born in 1826 US, Church is slighlty different compared to a 19th century American landscape painters in that his stimulation of its glory did not arise from the beauty if his own land but by the countries of South America. These exotic lands offered strangeness and barbarousy with their associations to Incas and Aztecs, as well as their Geographical association to volcanoes.
