Giovanni Francesco Caroto (c. 1480 Verona-1546 Verona) was the older brother of the painter and art theoretician Giovanni Caroto. He first studied painting in the workshop of Liberale da Verona, then in Mantua with Andrea Mantegna. In 1502 he settled in his native city, but also lived for an extended period in Lombardy. Caroto's early works were mainly influenced by Bernardino, Leonardo da Vinci and Giampietrino. In the 1520s he incorporated new inspiration from Raphael, Giulio Romano and Correggio into his artwork. Carto's mature style is both Mannerist and eclectic in character. His landscapes are extremely lyrical, and demonstrate the influence of Flemish art. Caroto's most significant works include Annunciation, 1508, San Gerolamo, Verona; Virgin and Child with St. Anne and Saints, 1528, San Fermo Maggiore, Verona; and The Temptation of Christ, 1531, Museo del Castel vecchio, Verona.
