An important representative of the School of Fontainebleau, moving and working there away from his native city from 1540 to 1550. He developed his mannerist painting style under the guidance of Niccolo del'Abbate and Francesco Primaticcio. In 1561 he was appointed court painter by Caterina de'Medici, later his duties also included providing the decorations for her large and lavish ceremonies in Paris. Characteristics of his works include groups of figures in large settings, elongated bodies in affected poses and also striking lightning effects. His significant works include The Massacre under the Triumvirate, Abraham and Melchisedek and Riders with Elephants.
