Hans von Aachen was a German mannerist painter. He began painting in Germany as a student of the Flemish master E. Jerrigh. He went to Florence and Rome to study Renaissance painting and became a student of Kaspar Rems. He studied the Italian masters and soon he developed his mythological and allegorical subjects style in later years. After returning to Germany in 1588 he made his living painting wealthy household portraits. Emperor Rudolph II granted knighthood to him. Aachen continued to receive painting commissions under the next emperor as well.
