About the Artist

Whose real name was Giovanni Antonio Canal, first studied the art of Theatrical scenery painting, around 1719 took an educational trip to Rome. He was also influenced by Giovanni Paolo Pannini and above all the painter Luca Carlevarij's, who specialized in painting vedute. Canaletto's works are based on a skillful use of perspective and the precise observation of nature. In his topographical city views he captured the beauty of architecture with great sensitivity. Nuances of atmosphere are created by the interplay of light and shade, as well as by the differentiated colouring of the sky. He also often included genre-like scenes to add some life to his pictures. Canaletto, who worked primarily in England from 1746 to 1753, made Venetian vedute famous beyond the borders of Italy itself. Major works include The Marble Workshop in San Vidal 1727, The Fountain of St. Mark 1739, The Eton Chapel 1747.
