About the Artist

David Teniers the younger (1610 Antwerp-1690 Brussels) first studied with his father, David Teniers the Elder. In 1632/33 he became a member of Antwerp's St. Luke's Guild, which he later headed as deacon. In 1637 Teniers married his first wife, Anna Bruegel, daughter of Jan Brueghel the Elder; her legal guardian was Peter Paul Rubens, who was also a witness at their wedding. Teniers moved to Brussels after he was appointed court painter to Archbishop Leopold Wilhelm (1641-1662) and curator of his important painting collection. Teniers was a many-faceted painter, draftsman and printmaker. He preferred to paint genre pictures, but also did historical narratives, allgories, portraits, landscapes, still-lifes and views of galleries. Works by the artist include The Country Wedding, 1637, Museo del Prado, Madrid; Kermesse in the Country, 1648, Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe; and The Art Gallery of Leopold Wilhelm in Brussels, 1651, Musees Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels.
