About the Artist

Fra Filippo Lippi (c. 1406 Florence-1469 Spoleto) entered the Carmelite order in 1421 and lived in the monastery of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence until 1432. There he could intensely observe Masolino and Massaccio engaged in painting the frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel, works which had a decisive influence on the young Lippi. In 1434 in Venice, and afterward in Florence, where he received numerous commissions from the Medici family. After 1452 Lippo lived in Prato, where he worked on the large wall frescoes in the main chanpel of the cathedral. After 1467 he began painting the frescoes in the cathedral in Spoleto, which were finished after his death by members of his workshop. Fra Fillippo Lippi's students included his son, Filippino Lippi, and Sandro Botticelli. Other works by the artist include The Annuciation c. 1450, Alte Pinakothek, Munich; Adoration of the Baby Jesus, c. 1459, Gemaldegalerie, SMPK, Berlin; and Virgin and Child wih two Angels, c. 1465, Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence.
