About the Artist

Taddeo Gaddi (c. 1300? Florecnce-1366 Florence) was Giotto's important student and also his longterm collaborator. Gaddi was also inspired by the work of Lorenzetti and the sculptor Tino di Camaino (c. 1285-1337). He deviated from these models, however, in that he used a freer construction of space, which he achieved through a diagonal depth perspective and multi-figured compositions. Gaddi's frescoes and panel paintings are also characterized by a richly detailed and less monumental conception, although his later works seem more picturesque. His workshop was continued after his death by his student and son, Agnolo Gaddi. Agonolo had assisted his father with countless frescoes while he was still living, so the boundary between the two artists is somewhat blurred; nonetheless, the son never achieved the same level of success as his father. Among the artist's works are The Story of Job, after 1340, Camposanto, Pisa; Virgin and Child Enthroned with Four Saints, c. 1345-1350, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and Virgin and Child with Angels, 1355, Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence.
